Dr. Matthew Antkowiak, DVM

Dr. Matthew T. Antkowiak is a graduate of the University of Minnesota (BS) in 1993 and the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University in 1997. Dr. Antkowiak has been an emergency veterinarian for 15 years with SouthPaws Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Center. A member of the SouthPaws intern class of 1997-98, Dr. Antkowiak assumed leadership of the SouthPaws internship program in 2002 and has been responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation, scheduling and selection of the new doctors to the program. Dr. Antkowiak was on the Brighheart Medical Advisory Board from 2009-2011. He is a member of the AVMA, DCVMA and NVVMA.

Born in Buffalo, NY, Dr. Antkowiak has lived in Washington, DC since 1998 and in Capitol Hill since 2000. Between being part owner of The Pug, A DC United season ticket holder, and years of playing soccer with the Capitol Hill Rovers, he has seen and been a part of the growth of Capitol Hill and the H St. Corridor. Capitol Hill has become his home and the friends he has made have become his family.

His cat, Altas "The Catless", is a Maine-Coon-style rescue from the streets of NE Washington DC. He was found "scruffy, damaged and full of fleas" and primarily acts like a dog, hence his name.

Dr. Antkowiak has participated in spay/neuter clinics in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico and has ventured to El Salvador to teach surgical and sterile techniques. A self proclaimed "travel bug" and certified diver, Dr. Antkowiak has been to Germany, England and Scotland for world class soccer, hiking in Chile and has been diving in Mexico, Nicaragua, New Zealand, Australia, and Tonga. Travel, live jazz/small venue music and his beloved (yet heartbreaking) Buffalo sports teams are integral parts of his life.

Dr. Antkowiak is proud to be part of the first veterinary hospital on H St. It has long been a dream of his to be able to walk to work through the neighborhood he loves. He looks forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship with the community.
